Pharmacological actions of extracts of propolis of stingless bees (Meliponini)

Abstract

The propolis of native stingless bees has the potential for the development of pharmacological compounds with antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In Brazil, the high number of stingless bee species, together with the great plant diversity used in propolis production shows the complexity of the subject. The data available regarding the chemical composition and procedures for the extraction of the propolis are currently meagre and inconclusive. In this review, we summarize our understanding to date, of the propolis found in stingless bee nests and discuss its potential for therapeutic applications.

El propóleo de abejas sin aguijón presenta potencial para el desarrollo de compuestos farmacológicos con propiedades antimicrobianas, anticancerígenas, antiinflamatorias y antioxidantes. En Brasil, el elevado número de especies de abejas sin aguijón, junto con la gran diversidad vegetal utilizada en la producción de propóleos, muestra la complejidad del tema. Los datos disponibles sobre la composición química y los procedimientos para la extracción del propóleos son actualmente escasos y no concluyentes. En esta revisión, resumimos nuestro conocimiento hasta la fecha, del propóleos que se encuentra en los nidos de abejas sin aguijón y discutimos su potencial para aplicaciones terapéuticas.
