Abstract
The use of artificial substrates for the study of attached micro-algae is a well established research technique which is suitable for teaching purposes in schools and colleges. A useful modification of the technique is described. This provides algal populations particularly suitable for microscopic examination. Indirect estimation by means of chlorophyll a determination is possible and a method for this is also described. A variety of environments in which these methods can be applied is suggested. The scope for these studies is examined and examples taken from a study on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal andanother on two Cheshire ponds, are cited in support.
