The development of a curriculum monopoly in Australian secondary schools: Biological Science: The Web of Life 1 Origins and spread

Pages 15-28 | Published online: 13 Dec 2010

Abstract

The Australian adaptation of the American Biological Sciences Curriculum Study materials was undertaken jointly by the South Australian Public Examination Board and the Victorian Universities and Schools Examination Board, with the sponsorship of the Australian Academy of Science. This paper describes the origin of Biological Science: The Web of Life, and its spread to all other states; the second paper (Lucas, 1980) examines the limited evaluative evidence and other studies based upon the programme and considers the potential long-term dangers in a monopoly curriculum which may outweigh the advantages to present generations of pupils.
