Abstract
Live fern gametophytes are an invaluable aid in teaching alternation of generation life cycles. Gametophytes can be easily cultured from spores on solid mineral media for classroom use. Growth is rapid; in Cyrtomium falcatum and Pellaea ovata, macroscopic gametophytes with young sporophytes are apparent eight weeks after inoculation. Cultures are hardy, and fungal contamination can be treated with phenol.
