Abstract

Students often have difficulty appreciating that implicit in the term ‘homeostasis’ is the continual dynamic fluctuation of a living system about a steady state.

An adaptation of Biofeedback Microlab software to a laboratory exercise in cardiac dynamics is described. As one aspect of the exercise, students are able to observe the fluctuation of heart rate with ventilation in a resting subject, thus emphasizing the dynamic aspect of homeostatic regulation.
