Using Vibrio natriegetis for studying bacterial population growth, artificial selection, and the effects of UV radiation and photo-reactivation

Abstract

The moderately halophytic bacterium Vibrio natriegens is recommended for senior school investigations into both microbial population growth rates and mortality as a result of UV radiation. A protocol for investigating the phenomenon of photo-reactivation is described. The use of micropipette tips is suggested as a means of carrying out serial dilutions on a micro-scale, thus reducing the cost of the technique in terms of time and consumables. A range of realistic suggestions for investigations by senior school pupils is made.
