Abstract
This short piece is a departure from the type of article usually published in this journal. It does not report research on the teaching of economics, but attempts to identify the real costs and benefits involved in becoming a department chairperson. This fascinating application of cost-benefit analysis and the opportunity cost principle could be used to illustrate some basic economic concepts to students, and it will certainly interest those who contemplate departmental administration.
