Abstract

This paper is based upon an experiment at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Social Work.

It is a description and analysis of an innovative learning program in which first year graduate social work students were assigned to distinct neighborhoods to use as arenas for experientially learning about social welfare, social work, and the consumers of the services. An aspect of the innovation called “experiential live-in” is described in some detail and the social, economic, and psychological factors are analyzed.
