The Consequation Exercise: A Tool for Teaching Behavior Modification to Social Work Students

Pages 96-103 | Published online: 31 Jul 2013

Abstract

The growing use of behavior modification in social work practice alerts us to the need to find ways to strengthen this area of knowledge and technology in our educational programs. Here the basic concepts are summarized along with an exercise outlining the basic steps of contingency management for practical application of these principles by students. The discussion includes definition and analysis of target and outcome behaviors, data collection and graphing, and the strategy and tactics of behavioral intervention, as well as an outline for handling the writeup of the behavioral intervention.
