Abstract
Social work education programs are based on philosophical assumptions about the relationship between social work practice and society. Four distinct stances as to how the profession should relate to society are identified and discussed: social work versus society, (2) social work as a distinct entity independent from society, (3) social work as an instrument of society, and (4) social work as an intermediary between the individual and society. Each is evaluated with regard to its potential for being appropriate to the profession. The advantages of social work as an intermediary between the individual and society are stressed.
