Abstract
The Council on Social Work Education Task Force on Structure and Quality has urged that immediate attention be given to specifying base content in the curriculum. But prior to the selection of such content, attention must be given to ideological and practical concerns in curriculum development. This paper discusses the constraints imposed by the goals of the profession, student capacities, the information deluge, and the need for faculty cooperation. Specific suggestions on curriculum design are offered for responding to these constraints, utilizing the criteria of relevancy, flexibility, durability, and parsimony. Competency testing is discussed as a useful vehicle for effecting desired changes.
