Abstract
Personal social services are growing rapidly through purchase and subsidy, not direct provision by government. Design, finance, and monitoring of social service skills are at a premium. The program developer, a new professional role, is conceptualized in this paper. Schools of social work can ensure that program developers have a sound welfare philosophy and understanding of practice methods, as well as competence in relevant technology. A curriculum model based on an interdisciplinary approach is presented and opportunities for the new role are discussed.
