The Prestige of Social Work Educators in the University

Pages 13-20 | Published online: 20 Jun 2013

Abstract

A study of graduate social work educators representing 53 schools of social work indicated that they perceived themselves as having less prestige in the university than 12 of 22 academic disciplines with whom they were asked to compare themselves. Despite a rather pessimistic projection of their relative standing in the professional and university hierarchies, social work faculty suggested that increased research, publications, and knowledge-building activities may serve to enhance their image and credibility in the more traditional university community of scholars.
