The Family Role Revolution

&
Pages 51-57 | Published online: 08 Aug 2013

Abstract

As family life styles change, adults in various family forms handle their marital and parental roles in different ways. This paper examines the implications for social work education of the trend toward symmetry in the major family roles. Drawing on their research of an emerging family form—the egalitarian or role-sharing marriage—the authors conclude that it is becoming outdated to make distinctions on the basis of sex in considering family roles.
