Graduate and Undergraduate Social Work Education: Roots of Conflict

Pages 66-77 | Published online: 19 Jun 2013

Abstract

Current debates about the relationship between graduate and undergraduate social work education and the role of the BSW practitioner have their historical precedents in the 1940s. Such debates are an important part of the development of social work as a profession. Using the Bucher and Strauss process model of professionalization, this article examines the history and implications of the growth of the National Association of Schools of Social Administration and its conflicts with graduate school interests.
