Summary
Three groups of rats (Total N = 21) were trained and extinguished in a straight alley to investigate the effects of a shift of reinforcement percentage upon resistance to extinction. Two partial groups were there which received gradually increased (gI) or gradually decreased (gD) ratios of reinforcement (55% schedule) in the course of training. A third group was a continuous control group. The three groups attained asymptotic performance at the last day of acquisition, and the partial reinforcement effect (PRE) was obtained. The gI was more resistant than the gD. These results were discussed in terms of the reinforcement level view derived from the sequential theory of the PRE.
