Medication and Hyperactivity: A Meta-Analysis

&
Pages 79-86 | Received 15 Jul 1982, Published online: 06 Jul 2010

Summary

This article compares the traditional literature review and a statistical method of combining studies. The results of a meta-analysis centering on stimulant-drug therapy for hyperactive children indicate a highly reliable but comparatively small treatment impact. Attentional variables are affected to the greatest extent by stimulant medications. Criteria important in academic settings are apparently affected the least. Implications of these findings are discussed.
