A Comment on Correlation in Skewed Distributions

Pages 211-215 | Received 26 Nov 1996, Accepted 22 Apr 1997, Published online: 30 Mar 2010

Abstract

If the marginals of a bivariate normal distribution are transformed (e.g., by exponentiation), the product-moment correlation is reduced. Dunlap et al. (1995) recently discussed this effect in a psychological context; it is also of interest in some physical science contexts (such as structural mechanics, geology, and meteorology). Its relevance to these fields is discussed.
