Pollutant transport and residence time in a distorted scale model and a numerical model

Summary

A systematic investigation of the circulation, pollutant transport and residence time in a distorted scale model of the Windermere Basin was undertaken by using a numerical approach. A numerical hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate the circulation pattern in the basin. The experimentally validated flow circulation was used as input to the pollutant transport model to imulate the transport of a pollutant Continuous Iy introduced at the inlet of the basin. The simulated re utt were found to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements. With the aid of the validated model, the influence of the wind, recirculation and dead zone, and construction of dikes on the residence time distributions in the basin were examined.

Résumé

La circulation, le transport de matiére polluante et le temps de séjour dans un modéle physique distordu du Bassin de Windermere ont été étudiés systématiquement á I’aide d’un modéle numérique. Un modéle numérique hydrodynamique a été développé pour simuler la circulation dans le bassin. La circulation validée expérimentalement est utilisée comme entrée du modéle pour simuler le transport des matiéres polluantes introduites de façon continue é I’entrée du bassin. Les résultats simulés sont en accord avec les mesures experimentales. A I’aide du modéle ainsi validé, les effets de divers facteur sur le temps de séjour á I’intérieur du bassin ont été étudiés : effets combinés du vent, de zones d’eau morte, de la recirculation ainsi que de la contruction struction de digue.
