Pages 355-371 | Received 27 Aug 1990, Published online: 19 Jan 2010

Abstract

Apart from the physical and chemical properties of the bed of a watercourse, its biological settlement can also have a major influence on bed erosion. The present paper contains a systematic review of the effects of benthic settlement on the action of flow and on sediment stability. The qualitative description centered on the physical mechanisms is supplemented by a tabulated summary of the numerical results available from the literature.
