Abstract
Social scientists often use variable ratio (VR) schedules to represent probabilistic choice. This application of VR schedules is an apparent contradiction of a well-established psychological expectation. In this letter we attempt to explain this contradiction, and we conclude that so many factors affect human choice in VR situations that conventional applications are likely to be approximately correct when applied to humans.
