A model for research problem allocation among members of a scientific community

Pages 1-36 | Published online: 26 Aug 2010

We present a model for the time distribution of research problems among members of a scientific community. For excessively high rates of population growth the model possesses an instability which can be interpreted as a total breakdown in scientific progress. We suggest a number of empirical tests for our hypotheses and discuss the possible broad implications of our results.
