A mathematical model for the dynamics of interactions between a unilingual and a bilingual population: Persistence versus extinction

Abstract

Models for the growth of a population with one unilingual and one bilingual component are developed. Each model consists of a system of two autonomous ordinary differential equations. Conditions under which the populations of both components will approach a unique and stable steady state are investigated. In addition, conditions under which the bilingual population will become extinct and conditions under which it will persist are derived.
