Abstract
Underwriters’ Laboratories is currently engaged in the development of a Safety Standard covering microwave ovens. Key requirements are the Federal Regulations established on October 6, 1971. To supplement these requirements, UL has established a number of performance tests applying to oven doors and their hinges, latches, seals and interlock mechanisms, since proper design, construction and operation of these components are necessary for the safe operation of the oven. These performance tests, which are described in the following paper, are mechanical in nature and assess the mechanical strength, durability, resistance to wear or deformation, imperviousness to cooking greases and oils, and other performance features of these components necessary for compliance with the letter and intent of the Federal Regulations.
