Occurrence of the aberrant Bryozoan Monobryozoon ambulans Remane, off the Yorkshire Coast

Pages 113-117 | Published online: 17 Feb 2007

Summary

Fifteen specimens of the aberrant walking Bryozoan Monobryozoon ambulans Remane were found in shell-gravel off the Yorkshire coast. The collections methods are described in detail. This is the second record of this species.

The species conforms to the original description. Additional information on a sexual reproductive phase, not previously recorded, is given.

Note added in proof.—Some 20 specimens of M. limicola have recently (October 1969) been located in the detritus layer at the inshore edge of the gravel patch indicated in fig. 1. These specimens conform to the original description of Franzen. Dr. F. Monniot (pers. comm.) has found considerable numbers of M. limicola in epibenthic sledge samples of mud at Roscoff, France. Thus, M. limicola also has a considerably wider distribution range than has hitherto been known.
