Species diversity in tropical Sphingidae and a systematic list of species collected in Sierra Leone

Pages 177-194 | Published online: 17 Feb 2007

Summary

1 Estimates of species diversity based on the logarithmic series are given for three samples of Sphingidae collected in Sierra Leone. Two independent methods of sampling gave values that did not differ significantly.

2 Most common species of Sphingidae occurred in all months of the year, but some of the most abundant species reached peak numbers with the onset of the rainy season in March to May. Diversity falls as numbers rise and the lowest values of diversity were obtained when the moths were most abundant.

3 An annotated list is given of 67 species of Sphingidae collected in Sierra Leone in 1966 to 1969.
