Observations on spicule extrusion in a siliceous sponge

Summary

Experiments on Hymeniacidon perleve maintained in an aquarium failed to indicate spicule extrusion from healthy specimens. Earlier reports in the literature of spicule extrusion from siliceous sponges are not conclusive and at present there is little evidence for occurrence of the phenomenon.
