A large fossil gamebird, Phasianidae, from the Middle Miocene of Turkey

Pages 135-137 | Received 01 Feb 1984, Published online: 17 Feb 2007

Abstract

The first fossil bird specimen from Turkey, from the Middle Miocene, is a portion of tarsometatarsus of a large phasianid gamebird. It bears a large spur core of a more generalized type, and is the earliest evidence of legs spurs in galliform birds. It may be a new taxon, or possibly referable to Miophasianus medius.
