The Measurement of Information in Practical Photographic Systems

Pages 65-73 | Received 13 Feb 1961, Published online: 23 Jul 2016

Abstract

The efficiency of a film is defined here as the square of the resolution divided by the mean exposure level. Methods of defining the resolution are given, using currently accepted measurements of response curves and granularity. It is shown how the maximum value of efficiency (the information speed) varies with the type of film used and the problem involved. Some consideration is given to the design of materials to give high information speeds.
