Crystal Growth during the Formation of a Silver-Bromide Dispersion in Gelatin

Pages 121-133 | Received 11 Feb 1963, Published online: 22 Jul 2016

Abstract

When silver nitrate and patassium bramide solutions are added simultaneously in a continuous stream to a solution of gelatin, the relative rates of addition being such that the free bromide-ion concentration is of the order of 0.01 molar, then the nucleation and crystal growth of the resultant silver bromide dispersion follows a relatively simple pattern. The kinetics af crystal growth can be explained on the basis of the classical equations relating solubility and particle size. A possible extension of the techniques to investigate nucleation kinetics is briefly discussed.
