Abstract

An argument is developed which shows how optimum tone scales and sharpness characteristics of projected transparencies may be derived from information on the eye’s response to detail. Measurements are described which illustrate how this visual property dependS both on spotial frequency and on luminance relative to a fixed surround luminance. It is suggested that the main features of the response curves may be capable of explanation in terms of involuntary eye movements and light scatter within the eye.
