Visual Factors in Projected Picture Quality–II Contrast Threshold Measurements Under Daylight Viewing Conditions

Abstract

Measurements of visual threshold contrasts under daylight viewing conditions are presented which demonstrate how the eye’s response to detail depends on spatial frequency and on luminance relative to a constant adapting luminance. Making certain assumptions the results are combined with those previously measured under conditions simulating the viewing of projected pictures to derive optimum characteristics for projected pictures, i.e., for the overall camera/film/projector/screen reproduction system.
