Reproduction of Aerial Images of Different Sharpness on “Lith-Type” and Extreme-Resolution EmulsionsFootnote*

Abstract

When users of Lith-type plates first attempt to obtain improved results by employing an extreme-resolution emulsion, they may observe but little improvement of sharpness. This situation was demonstrated by observing increases in the widths of sets of lines imaged by a lens at f/17 with a series of increasing exposures. Kodak Maximum-Resolution Plate gave a rate of line-widening at least as rapid as the Lith-type plate. When the same object was imaged with a 16-mm microscope objective, the Lith-type emulsion showed some improvement, but M-R showed very great improvement. Qualitative consequences of these differences were shown by photo-micrographs. Also a greater change of line-width with development time occurred with the Lith-type plate.
