The Sensitivity of a Black and White Single-Mirror Schlieren Apparatus

Pages 191-196 | Received 28 Oct 1966, Published online: 23 Jul 2016

Abstract

An expression is derived for the sensitivity of a black and white single-mirror schlieren system; this expression relates the change that would be produced in the density of the film of the camera recording the event with the total angular deflection of light caused by the disturbance being studied in terms of the optical parameters of the system. The expression was verified and the sensitivity determined making use of soap bubbles filled with carbon dioxide to produce the required small deflections of light.
