Visibility of Star Images in Perfect Records and Photographs

Pages 114-116 | Received 02 Mar 1968, Published online: 23 Jul 2016

Abstract

The frequency with which any given number of photons in images of stars is exceeded when recorded by a perfect recorder is calculated as a function of the (average signal)/noise ratio. Essentially the same kind of result is expected to apply to photographs. Available experimental results suggest that the precision of photographic records observed by eye is about 2/3 that of a perfect photon counter.
