Abstract

Captive single particles of bituminous coal and droplets of residual fuel oil have been heated at rates simulating those obtaining in large boilers (maximum about 101 Csec-1). The behaviour of the fuels has been monitored by high speed kine photography and simultaneously their temperatures have been measured using an infra-red technique. Typical examples of the results obtained are given and their significance in understanding the mechanism of combustion is briefly discussed.
