Influence of the Habit of Silver Halide Crystals on the Absorption Spectra of Adsorbed Sensitizing Dyes II. Chloride Emulsions

Abstract

In Part I the crystal habit influence has been studied in bromide and iodobrimide emulsions.

Recent advances in the knowledge of the crystallization process of silver chloride in emulsions disclose now the possibility of preparing crystals of a new crystallographic form: the {110} habit. This led to a study of the aggregation pattern of spectral sensitizing dyes influenced by the different crystal habits.

The formation of J-aggregates seems to be promoted by a {1OO} habit, whereas {110} and {111} crystals induce M- or D-absorption maxima. This behaviour is completely unexpected and quite different from that observed on silver bromide crystals.

Dans la Ire partie cette influence de l’habitus du cristal a été étudiée dans les émulsions au bromure et à l’iodo-bromure d’argent.

Des progrès récents dans la connaissance du processus de cristallisation du chlorure d’argent dans les émulsions offrent la possiblité de préparer des cristaux d’une nouvelle forme cristallographique: l’habitus [110]. Ceci a conduit à l’étude sive l’aggrégation de colorants sensibilisateurs spectraux, influencée par les différents habitus cristallins.

Apparemment, la formation d’aggrégats J est favorisée par un habitus [100], tandis que les cristaux [110] et [111] produisent des maxima ??????ion M et D. Ce comportement est complètement inattendu et diffère fortement de celui qui a été observé chez les cristaux de bromure ’argent.

In Teil I ist dieser Einfluss des Kristallhabitus in Bromid- und Jodobromid-Emulsionen untersucht worden.

Neue Fortschritte in der Kenntnis des Kristallierungsvorgangs von Silberchlorid in Emulsionen bieten nunmehr die Möglichkeit, Kristalle einer neuen kristallographischen Form, nl. des (110)-Habitus, herzustellen. Dies führte zu einem Studium des Aggregationsmusters von Spektralsensibilisierungsfarbstoffen, das durch die unterschiedlichen Kristallhabitus beeinflusst wird.

Es zeigt sich, dass die Bildung von J-Aggregaten durch den (100)-Habitus gefördert wird, während 110}- und {111}-Kristalle M- bzw. D-Absorptionsmaxima bewirken. Dieses Verhalten ist völlig unerwartet und weicht von dem an Silberbromidkristallen beobachteten stark ab.

Nella parte I si è studiata l’influenza della condizione di questi cristalli in emulsione di bronzo e idrocarburo. Recenti progressi nella conoscenza del processo di cristallizzazione del cloruro di argento in emulsioni rivelano adesso la possibilità di preparare cristalli di una nuova formula cristallografica: la condizione (110). Ciò ha portato ad uno studio del modello di aggregazione dei coloranti di sensibilizzazione spettrale influenzati dalle diverse condizioni dei cristalli.

La formazione di aggregati J sembra essere promossa da una condizione (100), mentre i cristalli (110) e (111) inducono massimi di assorbimento M o D. Questo comportamento è del tutto inatteso e differente da quello osservato su cristalli di bromuro di argento.
