The Flash Photolysis of Dyes Adsorbed to Emulsion Grains

Abstract

A technique has been developed for the flash-photolytic study of sensitizing dyes adsorbed to photographic emulsion grains, utilizing the optical properties. of very fine silver halide grains in conventional gelatin coatings. Flash-induced transient absorptions were readily observed with four cyanme dyes, so demonstrating the effectiveness of the techinque for dye-sensitization studies. The transients were shown to decay by two first-order processes and were attributed to the dyes m their adsorbed state.

The absorption spectra of the adsorbed dyes are also presented.

Résumé

Une technique mettant à profit les propriétés optiques des cristaux très fins d’halogénure d’argent dispersés dans la gélatine a été mise au point pour étudier la photolyse flash de colorants sensibilisateurs adsorbés sur les grains d’une émulsion photographique. Le flash induit des absorptions transitoires qui ont été aisément observées avec quatre cyanines, montrant ainsi l’éfficacité de la technique pour l’étude de la sensibilisation spectrale. On a montré que ces absorptions transitoires disparaissent suivant deux processus de premier ordre et qu’elles sont attribuables aux colorants à l’état adsorbé.

Les spectres d’absorption des colorants adsorbés sont également présentés.

Zusammenfassung

Eine Methode wurde entwickelt für die blitzlicht-spektroskopische Untersuchung von Emulsionskörnern, beruhend auf den optischen Eigenschaften besonders feinkörniger Gelatinemulsionen. Transiente Absorptionsbanden wurden an vier verschieden Cyaninfarbstoffen beobachtet und somit die Brauchbarkeit des Verfahrens für das Studium von Sensibilisierungsprozessen demonstriert. Die transienten Spektren folgen einem Abklingprozess erster Ordnung und werden den adsorbierten Farbstoffen zugeschrieben. Die Absorptionsspektren der adsorbierten Farbstoffe werden mitgeteilt.

Riassunto

E’ stata sviluppata una technica per lo studio fotolitico dei coloranti sensibilizzatori adsorbiti dalla grane dell’emulsione fotografica, utilizzando le proprietà ottiche di alogenuro di argento a grana fina nello strato della gelatina convenzionale.

Assorbimenti transitori di lampi indotti sono stati prontamente osservati con 4 coloranti cianinici dimostrando cosi l’effettività della tecnica per lo studio della sensibilizzazione dei coloranti. I transienti sono stati notati decomporsi per i due processi di primo ordine e sono attribuiti ai coloranti nel loro stato d’adsorbimento.

Gli spettri di assorbimento dei coloranti adsorbiti sono anche presentati.
