The Determination of Hydroquinone in the Presence of Phenidone in Photographic Developers by Means of the Technicon Auto Analyser

Abstract

A colorimetric AULO Analyser method for the estimation of hydroquinone was found to give an over-estimate when applied to developers also containing Phenidone. The apparent increase is proportional to the concentration of Phenidone, but independent of the hydroquinone concentration at normal working concentrations. Thus, after estimating the Phenidone content of a sample, it is possible to correct for the apparent increase and to determine the true hydroquinone concentration.

Résumé

. La méthode colorimétrique de dosage de l’hydroquinone avec l’Auto Analyseur Technicon fournit des résultats par excès lorsque le révélateur contient de la Phénidone.

L’excès apparent est proportionnel à la concentration de la Phénidone mais est indépendant de celle de l’hydroquinone. Il est ainsi possible après avoir évalué la teneur en Phénidone d’un échantillon, de corriger les résultats et de déterminer la concentration réelle en hydroquinone.

Zusammenfassung

Bei der kolorimetrischen Bestimmung von Hydrochinon in Entwicklerlösungen mit dem Technicon Auto Analyser wurden systematisch zu hohe Werte gefunden, wenn die Entwickler zusätzlich Phenidon enthielten.

Der absolute Fehler ist der Konzentration an Phenidon proportional. Er ist von der Hydrochinon-Konzentration unabhängig. Damit ist es möglich, durch vorherige Bestimmung des Phenidon-Gehaltes einer Probe, die auftretenden Fehler in der Hydrochinon-Bestimmung quantitativ zu korrigieren.

Riassunto

Un metodo colorimetrico, mediante Auto Analizzatore Technicon, per la determinazione dell’idrochinone, dà valori più alti quando viene applicato a sviluppatori contenenti Fenidone.

Questo apparente incremento è proporzionale alla concentrazione del Fenidone, ma è del tutto indipendente dalla concentrazione dell’idrochinone.

Perciò, dopo aver stimato il contenuto del Fenidone nel campione, è possibile correggere la misura e determinare la giusta concentrazione dell’idrochinone.
