The Role of Gold in Sulphur-Plus-Gold Sensitization

Abstract

Experimental data are reviewed which show that the internal-image speed of an emulsion optimally sensitized by sulphur-plus-gold is usually lower than that of the same emulsion optimally sensitized by sulphur alone. This demonstrates that one function of gold sensitization when combined with sulphur is to increase the probability of trapping of electrons at the grain surface, and thus to improve the efficiency of formation of surface latent image.

Revue des résultats expérimentaux montrant que la sensibilité interne d’une émulsion sensibilisée à l’optimum par sulfuration et par traitement à l’or est généralement inférieure à la sensibilité de la même émulsion sensibilisée à l’optimum par sulfuration seulement. Cette différence montre que, lorsqu’elle est combinée à la sensibilisation sulfurée, une des fonctions de la sensibilisation à l’or est d’augmenter la probabilité de piégeage des électrons à la surface des grains et de favoriser ainsi la formation de l’image latente superficielle.

Zusammenfassung

Die Durchsicht einer Reihe experimenteller Ergebnisse zeigt, daß die Innenempfindlichkeit einer optimal mit Schwefel plus Gold gereiften Emulsion gewöhnlich niedriger liegt als die der gleichen Emulsion, wenn sie allein mit Schwefel optimal gereift wurde. Mithin besteht eine Funktion der kombinierten Gold/Schwefel-Scnsibilisierung darin, die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Elektroneneinfanges an der Kornoberfläche und damit die Effizienz der Bildung des Oberflächen-Latentbildes zu erhöhen.

Riassunto

Vengono esaminati dati sperimentali che mostrano come la sensibilità interna di una emulsione sensibilizzata in modo ottimale con zolfo e oro sia in generale più bassa di quella della stessa emulsione sensibilizzata in modo ottimale con solo zolfo. Ciò dimostra che una delle funzioni dell’oro nella sensibilizzazione combinata con zolfo è quella di aumentare la probabilità di cattura degli elettroni sulla superficie del granulo ed aumentare cosi l’efficienza della formazione dell’immagine latente superficiale.
