The Spectral Absorption of Silver Iodobromides

Abstract

Measurements of density as a function of wavelength at temperatures of 293 K and 77 K have been made on sheet crystals of silver bromide and of silver bromide with various additions of silver iodide. Spectral absorption curves have been deduced from these data.

At 293 K iodide addition displaces the absorption curve to longer wavelengths without much change of shape, at least up to absorption coefficients of ~; 3 × 102 cm-1, but at decreasing rate with increasing addition. Temperature reduction generally displaces the absorption curves towards shorter wavelengths but changes of shape may take place, depending on the iodide content. Where comparisons can be effected there is reasonable agreement between the new data and that already available in the literature.

Mesure de la densité en fonction de la longueur d'onde à 293°K et à 77 K de lames de bromure et de bromoiodure d’argent de teneurs variées en iodure. Les courbes d’absorption spectrale ont été déduites des résultats obtenus.

A 293°K l’addition d’iodure déplace la courbe d’absorption vers les grandes longueurs d’onde sans en modifier notablement la forme, au moins tant que le coefficient d’absorption ne dépasse pas ~ 3 × 102 cm–1 L’effet d’additions successives d’iodure diminue avec la teneur en iodure.

L’abaissement de la température déplace généralement les courbes d’absorption vers les courtes longueurs d’onde et, pour certaines teneurs en iodure, provoque une modification de leur forme.

Chaque fois que la comparaison a été possible il s’est avéré que ces résultats présentaient un accord satisfaisant avec ceux que l'on peut trouver dans la littérature.

Zusammenfassung

An Kristallplättchen von Silberbromid mit unterschiedlichem Zusatz von Silberjodid wurde die Absorption in Abhängigkeit von der Wellenlänge bei Temperaturen von 293 K und 77 K gemessen. Bei 293 K verschiebt die Zugabe von Silberjodid die Absorptionskurve zu längeren Wellenlängen hin, ohne daß sich die Form der Kurve dabei stark ändert. Hcrabsetzen der Temperatur auf 77 K führt zu einer Verschiebung zu kürzeren Wellenlängen. Dabei werden jedoch, abhängig von Jodidgehalt auch Änderungen in der Form der Absorptionskurve beobachtet. Wo Vergleiche möglich waren, wurde eine befriedigende Übereinstimmung zwischen den neuen Daten und den vorliegenden Literaturwerten gefunden.

Sono state fatte misure di densità in funzione della lunghezza d’onda a temperature di 293 e 77 K su cristalli laminari di argento bromuro e di argento bromuro con varie quantità di argento joduro. Da questi dati sono state ricavate le curve di assorbimento spettrale.

A 293 °K raggiunta di joduro sposta la curva di assorbimento verso le lunghezze d’onda maggiori senza grosse variazioni di forma, con effetto tanto minore quanto più elevata è l’aggiunta. Una riduzione della temperatura in genere sposta le curve di assorbimento verso le lunghzze d’onda più corte mentre si possono avere variazioni nella forma della ctirva in dipendenza del contenuto di joduro. Si è trovato un ragionevole accordo fra i nuovi dati e quelli disponibili in letteratura, quando tale confronto è stato possibile.
