Concerning the Applicability of Siedentopf’s Law to Electrophotographic ImagesFootnote

Abstract

An analytical approach to noise in electrophoretically developed electrophotographic images has been elucidated, in which the deposition of toner particles in close-packed arrays, as proposed by van Engeland, and the effects of formation of multiple layers of toner in the deposit are considered. The relationship between toner particle size and system resolving power is also considered, in order to parameterize the noise-particle size relationship for the boundary condition at which the geometric and noise limits to resolution coincide. Comparisons of the predictions of the model to both published experimental data and original results are presented.

Résumé

Approche analytique du bruit dans les images électro-photographiques développées par électrophorèse considérant simultanément l’aggrégation en rangs serrés, comme l’a suggéré van Engeland, des particules de toner déposées et les effets de la forma-tion de multicouches superposées. On tient compte également de la relation entre les dimensions des particules et le pouvoir de résolu-tion afin d’établir les paramètres de la relation bruit-dimensions des particules pour les conditions où coïncident les limites de résolution dues aux effets géométriques et au bruit. Les prévisions tirées du modèle sont comparées avec les résultats expérimentaux publiés et les résultats originaux.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine analytische Näherung zur Beschreibung der Körnigkeit von elektrophoretisch entwickelten elektrophotographischen Bildern vorgeschlagcn. Dabei wird nach van Engeland ein Niederschlag der Toner-Teilchen in dicht gepackter Anordnung angenommen und es werden weiterhin die Effekte bei der Bildung mehrfacher Toner-Schichten berücksichtigt. Die Vorhersagen des Modells werden mit eigenen experimentellen Ergebnissen und mit publizierten Daten anderer Autoren verglichen.

Riassunto

Viene presentato un trattamento analitico del rumore delle immagini elettrofotografiche sviluppate per elettroforesi, nel quale si prende in considerazione sia la deposizione delle particelle del toner secondo la disposizione a pacchetti ravvicinati, come è stato proposto da van Engcland, sia gli effetti della formazione di multistrati di toner. Viene esaminata altresi la relazione fra la dimensione delle particelle del toner ed il potere risolutivo del sistema al fine di para me (ri zza re la relazione rumore-dimensione della particella per la condizione limite in cui i limiti di risoluzione geometrici e di rumore sono coincidenti. Viene fatto un raffronto fra le previsioni del modello e dati sperimentali pubblicati nonché risultati inediti.
