A New Autoprocessor Reprography System Based on the Thermophotodegradation of Photochromic Spiropyrans or Permanent Merocyanine Dyes

Abstract

Photochromic spiropyrans may be stabilized in their uncoloured or coloured forms for different imaging uses. A method of stabilizing coloured forms of photomerocyanines by incorporation into vinylic resins, which prevent their decoloration up to 70-100 °C, is described. The uncoloured spiropyran, however, needs to be removed or stabilized in order to avoid fogging of the image by further irradiation. This can be achieved by degrading the spiropyran by the combined effects of heat and irradiation. The realization that the degradation of the spiropyran proceeds through the merocyanine enabled a reprographic sy tern to be designed ba ed only on non-photochromic merocyanines.

Description d’une méthode de stabilisation des formes colorées de photomérocyanines par incorporation dans des résines vinyliques qui empêchent leur décoloration jusqu’à 70 °C et même 100 °C. Le spyropyrane non coloré doit cependant être éliminé ou stabilisé afin d’éviter la formation de voile lors de l’élimination ultérieure. Ceci peut être obtenu en dégradant le spyropyrane par l’action combinée de la chaleur et de la lumière. L’état mérocyanine intermédiaire qui se produit lors de la dégradation du spyropyrane permet de concevoir un système reprographique basé sur les mérocyanines non photochromiques.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine Methode beschrieben nach der farbige Formen von Photomerocyaninen durch Vinylharze stabilisiert werden, so dass ihre Entfärbung bis zu Temperaturen von 70-100 °C verhindert wird. Das ungefärbte Spiropyran muss jedoch entfernt bzw. ebenfalls stabilisiert werden, um die Verschleierung des Bildes durch weiter Belichtung zu vermeiden, Dies lässt sich erreichen durch Abbau des Spiropyrans durch Zusammenwirken von hoher Temperatur und geeigneter Bestrahlung. Die Erkenntnis, dass Abbau des Spiropyrans über das Merocyanin erfolgt, ermöglicht die Angabe eines reprographischen Systems, das allein auf der Verwendung von nicht-photochromen Merocyaninen beruht.

Viene descritto un metodo per stabilizzare le forme colorate di fotomerocianine mediante incorporazione in una resina vinilica che ne impedisce la decolorazione fino a 70100 °C. Lo spiropirans incolore tuttavia necessita di essere eliminato o stabilizzato al fine di evitare che l’immagini si veli. Ciò si può ottenere degradando lo spiropirano con gli effetti combinati del calore e della radiazione. L’osservazione che la degradazione dello spiropirano ha luogo attraverso la merocianina ha permesso di realizzare un sistema reprografico basato solamente su merocianine non fotocromiche.
