Short Time Exposures on Photographic Sensitive Materials. I. Experimental Technique

Abstract

A technique which allows photographic sensitive materials to be exposed in the time range 5 x 10-9-5 X 10-6 s i reported. This technique employs the light produced through the Cerenkov effect inside a quartz sphere hit by electron pulses generated from a linear accelerator. The experimental et-up and the exposure measurement are described. Preliminary results obtained using this method are presented.

Résumé

On décrit une technique qui permet des expositions particulièrement brèves sur des couches sensibles photographiques. La méthode est basée sur la production de lumière dans une sphère de quartz sous l’action des impulsions d’électrons engendrés par un accelerateur linéaire (effet Čerenkov). On décrit les détails expérimentaux de l’appareillage et la mesure de l’exposition. On présente le résultat d’une expérience préliminaire conduite suivant cette méthode.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine Belichtungstechnik beschrieben, die besonders kurze Belichtungen (10-9-5 X 10-6 s) auf photographische empfindliche Materialien erlaubt. Die Lichtblitze werden mittels einer Quarzkugel erzeugt, wenn dieselbe von den Elektronenpulsen eines linearen Beschleunigers getroffen wird (Čerenkov Effekt). Es werden Einzelheiten des experimentellen Aufbaues sowie die Belichtungsmessung beschrieben. Es wird über die Resultate eines Vorversuches berichtet.

Viene descritta una tecnica che consente di esporre materiali sensibili fotografici a lampi di luce di durata fra 10-9-5 X 10-6 s. La tecnica è basata sulla produzione, per effetto Čerenkov, di luce in una sfera di quarzo colpita dagli elettroni generati da un acceleratore lineare ad impulsi. Vengono descritti, in dettaglio, l’allestimento sperimentale e la misura dell’esposizione. Vengono esposti, a titolo di esempio, risultati preliminari ottenuti impiegando questo metodo.
