Reactions of Some Heterocyclic Thioamides with Silver Halides in Aqueous Media

Abstract

The reactions of five heterocyclic thioamides with aqueous dispersions of silver chloride, silver bromide and silver iodide have been investigated. The formation of sparingly soluble silver-thioamide compounds by the replacement of halide ions by thioamide anions plays an important role in these processes. However, physical interactions between the precipitated compound and unionized thioamide also influences the course of these reactions, especially in the case of phenyl-thioamide derivatives. Some evidence has been obtained which suggests that the photo-sensitivity of silver halide crystals is significantly reduced by the formation of a surface layer of silver-thioamide compound.

Résumé

Les réactions de cinq thioamides hétérocycliques avec des dispersions aqueuses de chlorure, de bromure el d’iodure d’argent ont été étudiées. La formation de composés argent-thioamide peu solubles par substitution des ions halogénure par des anions thioamide joue un rôle important dans ces processus. Cepcedant, les interactions physiques entre le composé précipité et le thioamide non-ionisé influencent égalementl’évolution de la réaction, spécialement dans Ie cas des dérivés phényl-thioamide. Des informations ont été obtenues, qui suggèrent que la photosensibilité des cristaux d’halogénure d’argent est significativement réduite par la formation d’une couche superficielle d’un compose argent-thioamide.

Zusammenfassung

Die Einwirkung von hetcrozyklischen Thioamiden auf Silberhalogenidc wurde an wässrigen Suspensionen von AgCl, AgBr und Agl untersucht. Dabei spielt die Bildung von schwcrlöslichen Silber-Thioamidverbindungcn durch Austausch von Halogenidionen durch Thioamid-Anionen cinc wichtige Rolle. Jedoch wird der Verlauf der Reaktion auch c1urch physikalische Wechselwirkungen zwischen der ausgerallten Verbindung und clem nichtionisierten Thioamid beeninfluss, insbesondere bei PhenylThioamidverbindungen. Es wurden Hinweise dafür gefunden, dass die Lichtemplinellichkeit von Silberhalogenielkristallen durch dic Bilclung einer Oberflächenschicht einer Silber-Thioamidverbindung merklich herabgesetzt wird.

Riassunto

Sono state studiate le relazioni di cinque tioamidi eterocicliche con dispersioni acquose di cloruro, bromuro e ioduro d’argento. In questi processi la formazione di composti poco solubili argento-tioamide derivanti dallo scambio degli ioni alogenuro coll’anione tioamidico gioca un ruolo importante. Però anche I’interazione fisica fra il composlo precipitato e 1a tioamide non ionizzata influenza il corso eli queste reazioni specialmenle ncl caso dci derivati feniltioamiclici. Sono state raccolle prove che suggcriscono che la sensibilitàdei cristalli di algogenuro d’argento venga significativamente diminuita dalla formazione di uno strato superficiale dcl composto argento-tiamide.
