The Redox Potential of Photographic Gelatin

Pages 149-155 | Received 07 Mar 1980, Published online: 21 Jul 2016

Abstract

This paper reports on a method to measure the redox potential of photographic gelatin. Results are satisfactorily reproducible (± 10 mV).

By contrast with other techniques for the determination of the “reducing power”. the results of which depend on the oxidant used, this technique gives intrinsic values. independent of any external system.

Measurements were carried out on photographic gelatins having different origins and properties. They show that the gelatin reducers are involved in a one-electron non-reversible mechanism.

The influence of inorganic (Ca(II), Fe(II), Zn(II)...., S02, ...) and organic ones (oses. nucleic acids,...) components of gelatin on its “reducing activity” is discussed.
