Active Impurities in Photographic Gelatins

Abstract

The problem of correlation between active impurities content of inert photographic gelatins and their effect on crystal growth and chemical sensitization is discussed.

Good correlation has been found between the restraining properties as evaluated by some turbidimetric tests (Reindorp and AmmannBrass) and nucleic acid impurities and proteic sulphur compounds as detected by the Abribat test. Some tests give better correlations than others and a new modification of the Abribat test is proposed.

It is shown that when the inert gelatins are tested with a direct positive emulsion there is a linear relationship with high correlation coefficient between speed and proteic sulphur content.

Résumé

Le problème de la corréelation entre les teneurs en impuretés actives des gélatines photographiques inertes et. I’influence de ces matériaux sur la croissance des cristaux et sur la senslblbsallon chimique est discuté. Une bonne corrélation a été trouvée entre les propriétés retardatrices évaluées par quelques tests turbidimetriques (Reindorp et Ammann-Brass) et les teneurs en acides nucleiques et en composés sulfurés protéiques détéermines par la technique Abribat. Certains te t donnent de meilleures corrélations que d’autres et une nouvelle modification de la méthode d’Abribat est proposée. Il est montré, qu’avec un coefficient de corrélation élevée,la sensibilité est une foncion linéaire de la teneur en soufre protéique lorsque les gélatines inertes sont essayées avec une émulsion positive directe.

Zusammenfassung

Der Zusammenhang zwischen Gehalt an aktiven Verunreinigungen in inerten fotografischen Gelatinen und ihrem Einfluss auf Kristallwachstum und chemischer Reifung wird diskutiert Zwischen den Hemmeigenschaftem (Trübungste Reindorp und Ammann-Brass) und dem Gehalt an Nukleinsäuren und schwefelhaltigen Proteinverbindungen (Abribal-Test) wurde allgemein eine gute Korrelatioh gefunden. Einige Tests f1ihren allerdings zu besseren Korrelationen als andere, deshalb wird eine neue Modifiaktion des Abribat-Tests vorgeschlagen. Wenn die inerten Gelatinen mit dem Rezept einer Direktpositiv-Emulsion getestet werden, erhiilt man mit hohem Korrelationskoeffizienten eine lineare Beziehung zwischen Empfindliehkeit und Gehalt an schwefelhaltigen Proteinverbindungen.

Viene discusso iI problema della correlazione fra contenuto di impurezze attive delle gelatine inerti fotografiche ed iI loro effetto sulla crescita dei cristalli e sulla sensibilizzazione chimica. E’stata trovata una buona correlazione fra proprieta ritardatriei valutate secondo alcuni saggi turbidimetriei (Reindorp ed Ammann Brass) ed iI contenuto di impurezze nucleiniehe e di prodotti a zolfo proteieo determinati secondo il saggio di Abribat. Alcuni saggi danno correlazioni migliori di altri; viene proposta una nuova modifica del saggio Abribat. Si dimoslra che quando Ie gelatine inerti vengono esaminate con una emulsione positivo diretto si ottiene una retazione lineare fra sensibilita e contenulo in zolfo proteica ad alto coeffieiente di correlazione.
