Silver Recovery by Metal Exchange

Abstract

The history, chemistry, electrochemistry and application of various metal-exchange processes of photographic silver recovery are reviewed. The factors leading to the formation of spent channels in steel wool charges are discussed. Among these are the exothermic nature of the reaction and the gauge of the steel wool used.

Cet article envisage l’histoire, la chimie, l’électrochimie et les applications des différents procédés de récupération de l’argent photographique par échange métallique Les facteurs entrainant une usure prématurée par la formation de canaux dans les cartouches de laine de fer sont discutés. Parmi ceux-ci, il faut citer la libération de chaleur par la réaction et le calibre de la laine de fer.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine Übersicht gegeben über Geschichte. Chemismus. Elektrochemismus und Anwendungen der verschiedenen Metall-Austauschverfahren (Zementationsverfahren) zur Rückgewinnung des Silbers in der Photographie. Die einzelnen Faktoren, die zur unerwünschten Kanalbildung in Stahlwolle-Chargen führen, werden diskutiert. Unter anderem spielt dabei die exotherme Natur der Reaktion und der Feinheitsgrad der verwendeten Stahlwolle eine Rolle.

Riassunto

Sono stati riesaminati la storia, la chimica, l’elettrochimica e l’applicazione di diversi sistemi a scambio di metallo per il recupero dell’argento usato in fotografìa. Sono stati discussi i fattori che portano alla formazione di canali morti nelle cartucce di lana d’acciaio. Fra questi sono la natura esotermica della reazione e il tipo di lana d’acciaio usata.
