A Study of a New Colour Granularity Formula

Abstract

A new mathematical formula for colour granularity has recently been proposed by Saunders1. Whereas some previously derived mathematical expressions of colour granularity have proved difficult to apply in practice due to the existence of terms having no real physical correlate, this new formula relates granularity to easily measured film parameters. Using this formula, successful granularity predictions have been made for a series of single-laver colour negative structures in which the coupler silver halide ratio was systematically varied.

Résumé

Une nouvelle formule mathématique a récemment été proposée par Saunders (1) pour représenter la granularité des images en couleurs. Alors que des expressions mathématiques antérieures s’avéraient d’un emploi difficile car elles comportaient des termes n’ayant aucune signification physique, la nouvelle formule relie la granularité à des paramétres du film aisément mesurables Cette formule a permis de prévoir de façon satisfaisante la granularité d’une série de films en couleurs négatifs monocouche dans lesquels on a fait varier systématiquement le rapport coupleur-halogénure d’argent.

Zusammenfassung

Von Saunders (1) wurde kürzlich eine neue Formel zur Berechnung der Farbkörnigkeit vorgeschlagen. Im Gegensatz zu einigen früher abgeleiteten mathematischen Beziehungen zur Beschreibung der Farbkörnigkeit, die in der Praxis kaum anwendbar waren, enthält die neue Formel nur der Messung leicht zugängliche Filmparameter. Mit Hilfe dieser Formel konnten Farbkörnigkeiten für eine Reihe einschichtiger Colornegativ-Filme mit systematisch variiertem Kuppler Silber-Verhältnis erfolgreich- vorausberechnet werden

Una nuova formula matematica per la granularità del colore é stata proposta recentemente da Saunders.

Mentre le espressioni matematiche per la granularità del colore ricavate in precedenza hanno trovato difficile applicazione pratica per la presenza di termini privi di una correlazione fisica reale, questa nuova formula correla la granularità con parametri del film facilmente misurabili. Usando questa formula sono state fatte delle buone previsioni di granularità su una serie di strutture di negativo colore a singolo strato in cui il rapporto copulante alogenuro d’argento veniva variato sistematicamente.
