A Study of the Aqueous Solution Equilibria of Sparingly Soluble Silver Salts of Heterocyclic Thioamides

Abstract

The aqueous solution equilibria of The silver salts of some tetrazole and triazole thioamides have been investigated bv determining the concentration of silver ions in saturated aqueous solutions of the salts as a function of the solution pH.

In the ease of the 1 ; 1 alkvlthioamide salts, silver 4-methyl 1-1.2.3.4-tetrazole-5-thione, silver 4-methy l-1.2.4-triazole-5-thione and silver 3.4-dimcthyl-1.2.4-tnazole-5-thione these equilibria can be explained in terms of a simple model based on the solubility product relationship and acid dissociation of the thioamide in aqueous solutions.

The solution equilibria for the phenylthioamide salts, silver 4-phcnyl-l,2.3.4-tetrazolc-5-thionc and silver 4-phenyl-l,2,4-triazole-5-thione are undoubtedly more complicated than those of the alkvlthioamide compounds It would seem that in the case of the phenyl compounds interactions between the solid salt and thioamide in solution, other than simple precipitation and dissolution processes, play a major role in determining the solubilities of these compounds in aqueous media.

Résumé

Les équilibres en solutions aqueuses des sels d’argent de certains thioamides tétrazole et triazole ont été étudiés par mesure de l’influence du pH sur la concentration des ions argent des solutions saturées de ce sels.

Dans le cas des sels 1 : I alkylthioamide. à savoir les sels d’argent de la 4-méthyl-1.2.3.4-tétrazolc-5-thione, de la 4-méthyl-l,2,4-triazole-S-thione et de la 3-4-diméthyl-1.2,4-triazole-5-thione. ces équilibres peuvent être expliqués par un modàle simple tenant compte du produit de solubilité et de la dissociation acide du ihioamide en solution aqueuse.

Les équilibres en solution des sels du phénylthioamide, à savoir les sels d’argenl de la 4-phény I-1.2,3,4-tétrazole-5-thione et de la 4-phény 1-1.2.4-tnazole-5-thione sont incontestablement plus compliqués que les précédents. Il semblerait qu’il intervienne dans le cas des composés phenyl des interactions entre le sel solide et le ihioamide en solution, interactions différant des processus simples de précipitation et de dissolution et conditionnant pour une large part la solubilité de ces sels en milieu aqueux.

Zusammenfassung

Die Lösungsgleichgewichte der Silbersalze einiger Tetrazol- und Tnazol-Thioamide in wässrigem Medium wurden untersucht durch Bestimmung der Silberionen-Konzentration in gesätiigten Lösungen dieser Salze, jeweils in Abhängigkeit von pH-Wert der Lösung.

Im Falle der 1:1-Alkylthioamidsalze wie Silber-4-methyl-l,2,3.4-tetrazol-5-thion. SiIber-4-methyl-l.2.4-triazol-5-thion und Silber-3,4-dimethyl-1.2.4-tnazol-5-thion können diese Gleichgewicht mit einem simplen Modell beschrieben werden, welches das Löslichkeitsprodukt und die acidische Dissoziation des Thioamides in wässriger Lösung berücksichtigt.

Dagegen existieren für die Lösungslgleichgewichte bei den Phenyl-thioamidsalzen wie Silber-4-phcnyl-l,2.3,4-tetrazol-5-thion und Silber-4-phcnyI-l.2,4-tnazol-5-thion zweifellos kompliziertere Bedingungen. Es scheint, das im Falle der Phenyl-Verbindungen zwischen dem festen Bodenkörper und dem Thioamid in Lösung andere Wechselwirkungen als Fällungs- und Auflöseprozesse eine wesentliche Rolle für die Löslichkeit spielen.

Riassunto

Sono stati studiati gli equilibri in soluzioni acquose dei sali d’argento di alcune tioamidi tetrazoliche e triazoliche determinando la concentrazione degli ioni argento in soluzioni acquose sature dei sali e la dipendenza dal pH della soluzione.

Nel caso dei sali 1:1 di alchil tioamidi. l’argento 4-metil-1.2.3,4-tetrazolo-5-tione, l’argento 4-metil-l,2,3-tnazolo-5 none, l’argento 3-4 dimetil-1.2.4-tnazolo-5-tione. questi equilibri possono essere interpretati in termini di un semplice modello basato sulla relazione del prodotto di solubilità e della dissociazione acida della tioamide in soluzioni acquose.

Gli equilibri di soluzione dei sali della feniltioamidi. l’argento 4-feml-1.2,3-4-tetrazolo-5-tione e l’argento 4-fenil-l.2.4-tnazolo-5-tione sono senza dubbio più complicati di quelli dei composti alchiltioamidici Sembra che nel caso dei composti fenilici nella determinazione delle sensibilità di questi composti in mezzo acquoso, oltre che i processi di precipitazione e dissoluzione, giochino un ruolo importante le interazioni fra sale solido e tioamide in soluzione.
